DETROIT (5/1/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team started its 2017 signings in royal fashion as the Titans announced the addition of fifth-year transfer
Roschon Prince (Long Beach, Calif. / Long Beach Poly / Long Beach State) to the program.
Â
"Having a veteran like Roschon gives us a player that's a versatile wing who rebounds relentlessly," said head coach
Bacari Alexander '99. "It became very evident that we needed to add some size and strength to our wing positions, and Roschon brings a unique element of toughness and maturity to our program which is very valuable."
Â
Prince played the last two years at Long Beach State after starting his career at USC. This past season, he was tabbed Honorable Mention All-Big West after posting 9.4 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds, second in the conference. He played in all 34 games with 19 starts and shot 46.6 percent from the field and 76.2 percent from the free throw line. His nine double-doubles were second in the Big West, while his seven in conference play ranked first in the league during the regular season.
Â
In 2015-16, he saw action in all 35 games with 10 starts and recorded 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for a team that made the NIT. He was also an Academic All-Big West selection.
Â
As a top 100 recruit at USC in 2013-14, he played in 27 games and averaged 4.2 points and 2.7 rebounds. Some of his best games that year included 13-point, eight-rebound effort against Villanova and a season-high 14 points against Boston College.
Â
In high school at Long Beach Poly in California, he was the 2013 Gatorade High School Player of the Year, which is based on athletics, academics and character. Prince was ranked the No. 92 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com and the No. 17 small forward. He tallied 20.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during his senior campaign as he helped the Jackrabbits to a 28-4 overall record and a No. 20 national ranking from MaxPreps.
Â
Prince is the first of a busy spring signing period for the Titans as they look to retool their roster and build the program back to championship heights.
