DETROIT (7/19/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program has released its full, 11-game non-conference schedule, which includes a number of home games from Calihan Hall this fall. Detroit Mercy officially released its non-conference slate
Tuesday on Twitter.
Head coach
Bernard Scott and the Titans have scheduled several games against high-quality opponents to help prepare them for the Horizon League season. Detroit Mercy plays three games against Big Ten opponents and six more against teams from the Mid-American Conference. The Titans play five teams that earned 19 wins or more last season and four teams that played in postseason tournaments.
"We have put together another schedule that will challenge us and prepare our team for the Horizon League," coach Scott said. "We are welcoming some good teams into Calihan Hall this season, where we were 10-2 last year. Our fans will have the opportunity to watch us play Michigan and Michigan State along with some other quality opponents.
"We will always challenge ourselves in the non-conference. I'm a true believer that the non-conference schedule prepares you for conference play."
Detroit Mercy welcomes in-state foes Michigan State and Michigan to Calihan Hall during the non-conference season. The Titans open the regular season at Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 10 before hosting Bowling Green on Nov. 13. The home opener against the Falcons is also the Kid's Day game at Calihan Hall.
The Titans host the Spartans, an NCAA Tournament team this past season, at home on Nov. 21. The red, white and blue then makes its first appearance in the San Juan Shootout since the 1997-98 season over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Detroit Mercy plays Clemson and North Texas back-to-back in Puerto Rico on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25.
Detroit Mercy is back on the road the next week, visiting Kent State on Nov. 30 before welcoming the reigning WNIT champions, Michigan, back to Calihan Hall on Dec. 4. The Titans make a trip across the state to Western Michigan on Dec. 8 and then head to their third Big Ten team, Illinois, for a Dec. 10 contest in Champaign, Ill.
The Titans close out the non-conference slate with home games against Eastern Michigan (Dec. 17) and Toledo (Dec. 21), teams that they have played in all three seasons under coach Scott.
Detroit Mercy enters its third season under coach Scott having tallied two-straight winning seasons and a trip to the Horizon League Championship game this past year. The Titans are entering the 41st season of women's basketball at the University.
