DETROIT (7/7/2017) -- Former University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball standout and Horizon League Player of the Year
Ray McCallum will take part in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas as the Titan signed a contract with the Houston Rockets.
The Rockets will compete in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which runs from July 7-17 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion.
The league is comprised of a record 24 NBA teams. Each team will compete in three preliminary round games from July 7-11 before being seeded in a tournament that starts on July 12 and concludes with the championship game on July 17. Each team is guaranteed to play at least five games.
McCallum spent last season playing in the NBA Development League with the Grand Rapids Drive before signing on late in the season with the Charlotte Hornets.Â
With the Drive, he appeared in 43 games with 42 starts and averaged 17.6 points, 7.0 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game, while shooting 44.3 percent from the field.Â
He did not make an appearance with Charlotte, but has played in 154 career NBA games over the course of the last four years with the Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies.Â
As a rookie with the Kings in 2013-14, he averaged 6.2 points and 2.7 assists in 45 games and then came back to play in 68 games the following season tallying 7.4 points, 2.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds. He saw action in 31 games with the Spurs in 2015-16 before ending the year with the Grizzlies, where he averaged 6.9 points and 2.7 assists in 10 games.Â
He played in the NBA Summer League in 2013 and 2014 with the Kings, leading Sacramento to a title in Las Vegas in 2014. He was selected the championship MVP after scoring 29 points with nine rebounds in the title contest.Â
McCallum was originally drafted by the Kings with the 36th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was the 2013 Horizon League Player of the Year and Lute Olson All-American as he helped lead Detroit Mercy to back-to-back 20-win seasons and postseason appearances as the Titans won the Horizon League Championship in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament and then earned a bid to the 2013 NIT.Â
A three-year starter from 2010-13, he holds career averages of 15.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.7 steals. He totaled 1,618 career points, good for eighth in school history, while his 451 assists rank seventh.Â
