Titans, Flames Clash on Saturday in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. (1/12/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team wraps up its week on the road Saturday afternoon, playing host UIC in a 4 p.m. ET and 3 p.m. local time game from the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

The Titans and UIC are meeting for the 52nd time in women's basketball with the two squads splitting last season. Detroit Mercy won at home, 98-76, before falling on the road by just one point, 63-62, last year. The Titans are 2-2 against UIC under head coach Bernard Scott. Detroit Mercy is 9-12 all-time in true road games.

Seniors Brianne Cohen and Nicole Urbanick continue to climb the career scoring list with Cohen going into 12th place (1,291 points) and Nicole Urbanick moving into the 20th spot (1,039 points) against IUPUI. Urbanick is just two 3-pointers away from second place in career 3-pointers made (217).

Freshman Lexey Tobel notched the sixth double-figure scoring effort of the season at IUPUI, scoring 16 points off the bench, 13 of them in the first half. She knocked down three triples during the contest and has a league-best 26 treys among Horizon League freshmen. She is shooting a team-best 34.7 percent from behind the arc.

The Titans are 23-18 in Horizon League contests all-time under third-year head coach Bernard Scott. Detroit Mercy went 12-6 last season en route to a third-place finish before reaching the Horizon League Championship game.

Last Time Out
Three Titans scored in double figures Thursday night, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 90-62 contest to host IUPUI in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Freshman Lexey Tobel scored a team-high 16 points off the bench for Detroit Mercy, while seniors Brianne Cohen and Nicole Urbanick each finished with 13 points in the contest for the Titans.

Detroit Mercy shot 40 percent in the game (20-for-50), including 7-for-17 from behind the arc (41 percent). The Titans had a season-high 10 steals, with seven different players recording at least one steal in the game.

Brittney Jackson and Zoey Oatis each scored six points for Detroit Mercy. Cohen had a team-best five boards, while Cohen, Jackson and Tobel all had two steals.

Scouting UIC
The Flames are on a five-game losing skid entering Saturday's contest against the Titans. UIC is 0-4 in league play, falling in a pair of close contests in its two most recent games. The Flames dropped a 70-67 contest at Cleveland State on Jan. 6 before falling 67-63 to Oakland at home on Thursday. UIC has a 6-4 record from UIC Pavilion this season.

Brittany Byrd leads UIC in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game, good for fourth in the Horizon League. Taylor Toney ranks 11th in the conference, averaging 13.3 points per game. Byrd is among the league leaders with 31 made 3-pointers. Gabryelle Johnson leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per contest. Toney is also fourth in the HL in steals with 36.

UIC is averaging 38.1 rebounds per contest as a team, ranking second in the league with 235 offensive boards.

All-Time Series
The Titans and Flames are meeting for the 52nd time in women's basketball, with Detroit Mercy holding a 27-24 series advantage over UIC. Detroit Mercy is 9-12 in true road games againt the Flames. The red, white and blue have won four of the last six against UIC.

Under head coach Bernard Scott, Detroit Mercy is 2-2 against the Flames and 1-1 on the road against UIC. Detroit Mercy split the games last season, winning 98-76 at home, before dropping a 63-62 contest on the road at UIC on Feb. 16.
