Men’s Basketball Out To Extend Winning Streak At IUPUI On Tuesday

DETROIT (1/15/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will make its first trip to Indianapolis since 2012 when the Titans meet Horizon League-newcomer IUPUI on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Game time is set for 7 p.m., at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, the off-campus home of the Jaguars. ESPN3 will carry the action live, and fans can also listen to 910 AM Superstation with the Voice of the Titans Cliff Russell with the play-by-play.

The trip to Indianapolis is the first for the red, white and blue since the 2011-12 season when Detroit Mercy defeated Butler, 65-61.

After the game, the Titans will return home for this year's Metro Series showdown against Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 20, before playing six of their next eight on the road.

Tickets can be purchased online, over the phone (313-993-1700 ext. 7301) or in person at Calihan Hall. For more information on tickets, contact Director of Ticket Operations & Sales Justin Hairston at hairstjj1@udmercy.edu.

ALL-TIME MATCH-UP
  • Despite being just about a four and a half hour drive, the Titans and Jaguars have never faced each other.
  • IUPUI moved to Division I in 1998-98 and was independent for two seasons before joining the Mid-Continent (now the Summit League) in 2000-01.

CALIHAN HALL TURNS 65
  • The 2017-18 season marks the 65th anniversary of historic Calihan Hall.
  • The dedication of the University's Memorial Building, as it was known back then, took place May 25, 1952. The first basketball game was played Dec. 2 of that year when the U-D men beat Kalamazoo, 75-61.
  • In 1977, the name was changed to Calihan Hall in honor of the Titans' first basketball All-American, the late Bob Calihan.
  • On Dec. 5, 2011, the floor of Calihan Hall was dedicated to former coach Dick Vitale.

ALLEN HEATING UP
  • Sophomore Corey Allen has been in double figures in 15 of his 18 games with five 20+ contests and three 30+ games.
  • In the last two games - two Titan wins - he is averaging 29.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting, including 60.0 percent from three and 80.0 percent at the free throw line.
  • He poured in a game-high 25 points going 9-of-14 from the field with eight rebounds and had the game-winning layup as time expired over Cleveland State. He followed that up with a game-high 34 points on 8-of-16 shooting with five 3-pointers and a career-best 13-of-16 at the line against Youngstown State.
  • In the prior seven games - where he played in six missing one due to a coaches decision - he tallied 9.5 points on 27.9 percent shooting and 23.1 percent from the outside scoring a total of just 57 points.

PAIR OF 30'S
  • Maybe a Titan first in the long and storied history of the program as two players went for 30 points in the win over Youngstown State.
  • Sophomore Corey Allen led the way with 34 points, while freshman Jermaine Jackson Jr. tallied 32.
  • Research is still being conducted to see if this has ever happened in Titan history.

OUR ROYAL PRINCE
  • Graduate senior Roschon Prince is starting to find his rhythm at Detroit Mercy as he was in double figures in scoring for the fourth time in the last five games and sixth total on the year.
  • He had 10 points and nine rebounds against Youngstown State and that was after a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds versus Cleveland State.
  • He ended with 10 points - hitting all five of his shots - against Wright State and almost recorded a double-double with nine points and 10 boards versus NKU.
  • He posted his first Titan double-double - and the seventh of his career - with 11 points and 10 rebounds at Milwaukee.
  • After averaging 5.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in his first 12 games, Prince is tallying 11.3 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting 64.4 percent from the field in the last six contests.

HIGH POWERED OFFENSE
  • The Titans currently rank first in the Horizon League and 45th in the nation in scoring offense at 82.3 points per game.
  • Detroit Mercy has scored at least 71 points in 16 games, including three 100+point efforts.

EXPLOSIVE
  • The Titans shot over 50.0 percent for the third time this season in the win over Cleveland State, but the story was the 70.4 percent (19-of-27) they shot in the second half, scoring 53 points in the process.
  • In the win against Youngstown State, the Titans shot 47.0 percent overall, but 58.6 percent (17-of-29) in the second half where they were also 8-of-11 from behind the arc and scored 59 points.
  • Detroit Mercy ranks second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (35.3%) and fourth in field goal shooting (44.4%).

CLEAN THE GLASS
  • The Titans have won the battle of the boards four times in the last six games - with the other two contests coming up equal - and that has all been in Horizon League play.
  • The Titans are coming off a game where they pulled down a season-best 21 offensive rebounds, the most since they had 22 against Green Bay in 2016.
  • Detroit Mercy recently outrebounded NKU by a 48-47 margin, the second most rebounds on the season behind only the 49 versus HBU.
  • The red, white and blue currently rank third in the Horizon League in rebounding at 37.5 per game.

TAKING ADVANTAGE
  • Detroit Mercy has done a great job at the free throw line connecting on 74.3 percent, third in the HL and 49th in the country.
  • Detroit Mercy has hit 80.0 percent or more at the line in seven games, including some great performances in 18-of-22 at Virginia Tech, 20-of-23 versus Seattle, 13-of-15 in the road win at Saint Louis, 12-of-14 versus Toledo and 17-of-20 against Western Michigan.
  • Some of the top free throw shooters include Jermaine Jackson Jr. (87.0%, 40-of-46), Kameron Chatman (86.7%, 52-of-60), Corey Allen (80.3%, 61-of-76) and Josh McFolley

JJJ FILLING UP THE STAT SHEET
  • Rookie Jermaine Jackson Jr. posted stats all around as a true freshman on the road in his collegiate debut at Virginia Tech tallying 16 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
  • The seven rebounds tied for the team lead, while his six defensive caroms led the team.
  • Jackson Jr. is coming off a monster game scoring a season-best 32 points against Youngstown State - one shy of a Titan freshman record - on 12-of-17 shooting with six 3-pointers.
  • He is the only freshman in the Horizon League this season with a 30-point game.
  • He tallied a then season-high 25 points at Green Bay - where he was 8-of-14 from the field with a season-high seven 3-pointers and has now scored in double figures in 13 games on the year.
  • Jackson Jr. is currently third on the team averaging 12.4 points to go with a team-best 3.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals.

  • Jackson Jr. leads all league rookies in scoring and made 3-pointers and is second in assists and steals.

ONE STRONG CHATMAN

  • On the year, he has started all 16 games he has played in and had netted seven 20-point games and six double-doubles.
