DETROIT (1/30/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics and the Titan women's basketball program are set to host a "Beat Cancer" weekend across the final three home games, from Feb. 15-19.
Proceeds from all three games will go towards Gilda's Club Metro Detroit, a local organization based in nearby Royal Oak that offers support for everyone afflicted with cancer. Fans may support the "Beat Cancer" initiative all month by bidding on raffle items at Titan men's and women's basketball home games, purchasing pink ribbons to be displayed at Calihan Hall or by donating to the cause.
The Detroit Mercy women's basketball team along with the department has raised more than $5,400 with their Pink Game initiatives in the last two years. The goal for the month of February is to raise more than $3,000 for Gilda's Club.
"This is a big event for us each year," head coach
Bernard Scott said. "We have been fortunate to raise over $5,000 for Gilda's Club to help with their patients and their families. We're all affected by this disease in some type of way, so it's definitely close to our heart. They are a great organization and they are a group that works with the families and victims that have cancer.
"(Having visited Gilda's Club), it's great to see how this money helps them do certain things. We are always happy to help them. There are a lot of great people over there."
Pink uniforms will be worn by the Titan women's basketball team during the final three games of the season -- Feb. 15 vs. UIC, Feb. 17 against IUPUI and Senior Night on Feb. 19 with rival Oakland visiting Calihan Hall. The first 200 fans that come out to the Senior Night game versus Metro Series-rival Oakland will receive a pink bandana.
