Detroit Athletics Mission Statement

TITAN ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics subscribes wholeheartedly to the University's mission and core values as expressed in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions. We emphasize the dignity and uniqueness of each person. Valuing the diverse population we serve, we commit our full resources to equal access and opportunity for all. We seek to enhance the reputation and image of the University by fostering a sense of pride and community in students, faculty, alumni, and the general public.

Responsible for conducting competitive men's and women's athletic programs, the Department is fully committed to impressing upon young student-athletes the values of a college education through attaining a baccalaureate degree. We exercise the same careful attention to the academic progress of student-athletes as we do to their physical conditioning and mental preparation for a game, maintaining thereby a healthy balance between academics and athletics. Whether on the playing field or at the study table, our student-athletes learn that character is formed through discipline, that leadership on a team is the best preparation for leadership in the larger moral and civic spheres in which they will live out the greater part of their lives.

While striving for success is inherent in the philosophy of intercollegiate athletics to which we subscribe, we will never allow the legitimate desire to win to compromise the academic or ethical integrity of our Department. Neither the physical welfare nor the academic success of our student-athletes will ever be sacrificed for the sake of winning a game. Therefore, the primary measure of the Department's success will be its ability to attract and retain students who succeed both academically and athletically, and whose careers after graduation are a tribute to them and the institution.

To those ends, the conduct of the Department's student-athletes, staff, and coaches shall always remain faithful to the intent and spirit of all applicable rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Horizon League, and UDM.
