Thirteen members of the University of Detroit Mercy softball squad, as well as head coach Sunny Jones and graduate assistant Ali Hess, showed up at Titan Field on Saturday morning, Nov. 7, as dozens of athletics staff, student-athletes, coaches, fans and alums were on hand for the Miles for Myles initiative at the outdoor track.
The fundraiser, created by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, was conducted as a tribute to Myles Brand, the NCAA president who passed away Sept. 16 after battling pancreatic cancer.
Part of the fundraising effort had everyone who participated in covering three miles around the track, one mile for each division of the NCAA, donate three dollars which was distributed to three different charitable funs for cancer reserach - NABC Coaches vs. Cancer® (American Cancer Society®); The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®; and The Myles Brand Endowed Chair for Cancer Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Detroit, just one of many school's to take part in the Miles for Myles initiative across the country, raised over $500 to help fund cancer research.
