The Detroit men's and women's tennis teams were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as the organization announced its All-American Academic Team and Scholar-Athlete award winners.

For the 2009-10 season, both the men and women were named All-Academic Teams as the women posted a team GPA of 3.469 while the men recorded a 3.329.

Eight Titan netters were also recognized individually as Scholar-Athletes with five on the women's side and three on the men's squad.

Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21), Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan), Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet), Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) and Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) were all named Scholar-Athletes. Flankova earned a 3.75 GPA, while Weldon notched a perfect 4.0. Sjoberg-Sundstrom had a 3.55 GPA, Capuano a 3.85 and Salas Espinosa a 3.564.

The ITA's All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above on a 4.00 scale. Eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year, including fall 2009 and spring 2010.

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
