INDIANAPOLIS -- The Detroit Titans advanced to the Horizon League Semifinals for the sixth straight season after upsetting the No. 3 seed Milwaukee, 4-3, in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament Friday afternoon at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
The No. 6 seeded Titans exacted revenge
after a 7-0 loss to the same Milwaukee Panther team Detroit played last Saturday in Milwaukee.
"It was an unbelievable fight. We started slow in doubles but then did a very good job of thinking about what we can do better and the whole team was fighting through every point and making adjustments. The girls worked very hard and they earned the win today," said head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.
After falling in the first two doubles matches, Detroit was looking to rebound in the singles portion of the dual-match.
The Titans would fall further after two singles losses and it was 3-0 before things started to turn around. Detroit went on to capture four straight singles wins to close out the match and a berth in the next round.
Elena Strakhova won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4 and
Julia Fernandes followed that with a three-set win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot.
Chloe Karoub tied the match, 3-3, in the No. 2 singles position winning 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 and leaving the final match point to be decided at No. 4 singles between senior
Amanda Cornwell and junior Kelly Fritz of Milwaukee.
The first set saw Fritz jump ahead with a 6-2 win but Cornwell stormed back to tie and force a third set with 6-4 win. Cornwell, who fell to Fritz Saturday at Milwaukee, came out with a 7-5 victory to clinch the match and propel the Titans into the semifinal match.
The next match for Detroit will be Saturday morning at 9am in the Horizon League Semifinals as they will play the No. 2 seed Cleveland State indoors (due to an inclement weather forecast) at the Butler Bubble on the Butler campus. The winner of Detroit/Butler will face the winner of the other semifinal between UIC and Butler on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the championship match.
