INDIANAPOLIS (11/4/2013) -- The Horizon League announced its women's soccer postseason awards on Monday afternoon and the Titans had six individuals recognized on this year's teams.
Junior
Alyssa Riley and senior
Kaitlyn Quarrell both took home All-Horizon League First Team honors, while junior
Alyssa Lotito garnered All-Horizon League Second Team recognition. Freshmen
Anna Mindling,
Kaitlan Vossen, and
Carley Rice all made the All-Horizon League Newcomer Team. It is the fifth time (1993, 2001, 2005, 2010) in the 21-year history of the women's soccer program at Detroit that three freshmen have earned All-Newcomer Team status.
For Riley, it is her second straight first team honor, and for Quarrell, it follows her Offensive Player of the Year award a year ago. Quarrell was named to the first team for the third time and captured a second team award as a freshman in 2010, while Lotito earned an All-Horizon League honor for the first time.
"Having two girls on the first team and another on the second shows how hard our team has worked," said UDM Women's Soccer Head Coach
Mike Lupenec. "It also shows how hard these individuals have worked this year and that their work was recognized by others."
Riley led the team offensively and defensively with a team-best six goals and 16 points. The co-captain also had four assists and was responsible for marking the opposing team's best offensive player.
Quarrell, another co-captain, tied for second-best on the team with five goals and added an assist, while Lotito finished the year with 10 assists to lead the Horizon League. For her efforts, Lotito has also been ranked in the top 20, reaching as high as 16th, in the NCAA.
Mindling, Vossen, and Rice have all played in each of the team's 18 games this season providing effective minutes when called upon. Mindling has been an aggressive player at the forward and midfield position, while Vossen has started 14 of the team's 18 games on the defensive back line playing every minute of the team's seven conference games. Rice has been a quality player in the midfield and her work paid off with her first two collegiate assists in a 2-0 win over Valparaiso on Oct. 26.
"The individual awards are great and well deserved, but ultimately, we want to win the Horizon League Tournament and earn that automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament this weekend," added Lupenec.
Detroit will host Valparaiso on Tuesday in the first round game Horizon League Championships at 2:00 p.m. at Titan Field.
