Penguins Chilled
Detroit wrapped up the 2013 regular season the same way the 2012 campaign ended, with a win over Youngstown State. The Titans downed the Penguins 1-0 last Friday in Youngstown, Ohio, as sophomore
Jennifer Borawski scored her fifth goal of the year in the 37th minute, knocking in a loose ball in front of the net off a corner kick. Sophomore goalkeeper
Martha Dunbar made three saves in recording her second-straight shutout and fourth in the Horizon League this year. It was her seventh overall blanking on the season.
Déjà Vu?
The Titans hosted Valparaiso on Oct. 26 and defeated the Crusaders 2-0. It was Senior Day and a freshman was the hero as
Kristen Tobin had the game-winning goal and an assist, while senior
Kaitlyn Quarrell also added a tally. Tobin's header from junior
Alyssa Riley off an
Alyssa Lotito corner kick 33:00 into the game would hold up as the game-winning goal. Tobin then assisted on Quarrell's marker in the 45th minute just before the end of the first half. Despite the loss, Valparaiso still finished with a 14-7 overall shooting advantage. In the overall series between Detroit and Valparaiso, the Titans hold a 7-3 edge.
Horizon League Championship
Milwaukee (6-1) earned the No. 1 seed for the third-straight year and will host both Horizon League Semifinals on Friday and the Horizon League Championship on Sunday. The Panthers are the five-time Horizon League women's soccer defending champion and will be looking for a sixth-straight title. Milwaukee and No. 2 seed Wright State (5-1-1) will earn a first round bye into the Horizon League Semifinals. Oakland (4-3) is the No. 3 seed and will host sixth-seeded Youngstown State (2-5) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The highest remaining seed of the two quarterfinal winners will play Wright State and the lower seed will play Milwaukee.
Titans Hosting the Playoffs
The women's soccer team has played in just three home playoff games at Titan Field. The last was on Oct. 28, 2006 when UDM won 1-0 over Green Bay in the first round of the Horizon League Championships. Detroit hosted the entire tournament in 2001 when schools rotated hosting the event (regardless of record). That year, Detroit defeated Green Bay 4-1 in the first round and lost 2-0 in the semifinals to the eventual champion Milwaukee.
Over the Horizon
Junior defender
Alyssa Lotito finished the regular season atop the Horizon League with 10 assists, and is currently 20th in the nation in that category. Lotito has started all 18 games this year as part of the defensive back line for Detroit and also is responsbile for many of the team's set pieces and corner kicks.
Home Field Domination
UDM finished a perfect 7-0 at Titan Field this year, not allowing a goal and outscoring opponents 22-0. Detroit has captured 11-straight wins at home and 15 of the last 16 overall. In each of those 11 games, the Titans have not allowed a goal. Dating back to the start of the 2010 season, Detroit is 24-5-2 in 31 games outscoring opponents 73-11 in that time. The Titans now have three seasons with seven or more home wins in a single season with the others in 2012 (7-2) and 1995 (7-0).
All-Horizon League Honors
The
2013 awards came out on Monday and junior
Alyssa Riley and senior
Kaitlyn Quarrell were both named to the All-Horizon League First Team. Junior defender
Alyssa Lotito took home All-Horizon League Second Team recognition and freshmen
Anna Mindling,
Kaitlan Vossen, and
Carley Rice all made the All-Horizon League Newcomer Team. It is the fifth time (1993, 2001, 2005, 2010) in the 21-year history of the women's soccer program at Detroit that three freshmen have earned All-Newcomer Team status. For Riley, it is her second straight first team honor, and for Quarrell, it follows her Offensive Player of the Year award in 2013. Quarrell was named to the first team for the third time and captured a second team award as a freshman in 2010, while Lotito earned an All-Horizon League honor for the first time.
Shooting for the Semifinals
A win for Detroit and the season will continue this Friday in the Horizon League Semifinals in Milwaukee. The two game times would be 5:00 p.m., against Wright State or 8:00 p.m., against Milwaukee. The highest seed to advance out of the first round will face Wright State and the lower seed will face Milwaukee. UDM will be looking to make its fourth straight Horizon League Semifinal appearance.
