TEMPE, Ariz. (3/2/14) – Senior
Karyn McCarty recorded a pair of RBI singles but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its final two games of the Louisville Slugger Invitational hosted by Arizona State on Sunday. The Titans fell to FIU 10-1 in the first game, before dropping the nightcap 11-3 to Ball State at the Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium.
McCarty drove in Detroit's (2-12) only run in the first game and followed with another RBI single in the nightcap to lead the Titans.
In the first game, FIU (14-6) scored one run in the bottom of the first inning before adding five in the second and four more in the third to build an early 10-0 lead. The Panthers were then able to maintain that lead by keeping the Titans off the bases as Cor Jenkins kept Detroit hitless until McCarty singled to right field to bring home
Christa McGahuey, who reached on a fielding error.
Jenkins finished the game throwing five innings, while only allowing one hit and one unearned run, while striking out three.
Kat Hoffman started for Detroit and went two innings giving up 10 hits and eight earned runs, before
Lauren Weldy came on in relief to go two innings allowing two runs on four hits.
In the nightcap, Ball State (12-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first, before the Titans responded with three in the top of the third to tie the game. McCarty,
Julia Maksym and
Vanessa Garcia each recorded and RBI for the Titans in the third inning.
But the score didn't stay tied for long as the Cardinals added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single and three straight doubles, before scoring five in the bottom of the fifth capped off by a three run homer from Taylor Rager.
Maksym pitched the entire game for Detroit throwing 4.2 innings with six earned runs and three strikeouts.
Detroit will stay out west as the Titans visit New Mexico for the UNM Lobo Classic on March 7-8. Detroit's first game against the Lobos will be on Friday, March 7 with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET at the Lobo Softball Field.
