DETROIT (1/6/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department is pleased to announce that the annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day returns for another year of excitement and entertainment. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, at historic Calihan Hall. The event is FREE and will start at 10:30 a.m.
 
Come and learn about the opportunities for girls and women in sports from Detroit's own Titan student-athletes. See what it takes to play with skills showcases, get autographs with your favorite players and get active!
 
The event will once again lead into Detroit's women's basketball game at 2:00 p.m., against conference rival Youngstown State.
 
The 2015 National Girls and Women in Sports Day will celebrate 29 years of an annual event that brings attention to the success of Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young girls in the United States.
 
This year's event is open to all girls ages 6-12, who will take part in a number of activities. The day will feature a variety of sports clinics at Calihan Hall, where student-athletes from UDM's varsity teams will provide skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations with all the attendees.
 
New to this year is a special panel made up of female athletes and coaches, who will talk to the girls about their life in sports, nutrition and the opportunities that exist in athletics.
 
Following the pre-game festivities, the Titan women's basketball team will battle the Penguins and during halftime of that contest, all the participants will come together on the court for a special halftime presentation with the Titan cheer and dance team.
 
The cost of the program is FREE, and all participants will receive complimentary admission for the basketball game. In addition, all attendees will receive lunch, a gift bag and t-shirt. 
 
And parents, while your kid is enjoying all the fun with the Titan student-athletes, you will be able to relax in the Titan Club and attend the game for FREE too.
