LOS ANGELES (9/4/2015) -- Junior
Anna Mindling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) scored her second goal of the season Friday evening, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team dropped the first game of its California trip, 5-1, to host Loyola Marymount University at Sullivan Field.
Detroit (2-3) scored early in the second half after putting a flurry of three shots on goal in the matter of seconds. After Loyola Marymount (2-2) successful fended off the first two shots, Mindling found the ball on her foot in the box and found the back of the net in the 63rd minute.
With her second goal of the year, Mindling has already matched her career high for goals in a season in just the fifth contest of the 2015 campaign. She scored two goals in both 2013 and 2014.
The Titans had a good look on net just minutes later as junior
Carley Rice's (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) pass into the box was headed just wide of the goal by sophomore forward
Phylisha Drayton (Troy, Mich. / Troy).
Freshman goalkeeper
Claudia Eustaquio (Mississauga, Ont. / Philip Pocock Catholic) made her second career start in net and made a career-high six saves for the Titans. Detroit sophomore
Marina Manzo (Washington Township, Mich. / Romeo) took over for the second half and turned away one shot.
Mindling finished with two shots on goal and leads the squad with 10 shots and seven shots on net this season.
Loyola Marymount finished the game with 23 shots, while the Titans had five shots in the contest. LMU had all eight corner kicks during the match.
The Titans return to the pitch Sunday afternoon for a 4 p.m. ET match at Cal State Northridge.
