#TitanTop10 – A+ In The Classroom For The Titans

DETROIT (7/14/2016) -- From July 4-15, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2015-16 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on all the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

At No. 2 is the hard work and dedication that the Detroit Mercy student-athletes put forth off the completion venue as the Titans had a great year in the classroom.

One of the biggest highlights was the announcement that senior Sara Zawacki of the Titan women's soccer team was named Valedictorian for the Class of 2016, just the fifth student-athlete since 1981 to earn the Valedictorian honor.

Women's lacrosse senior Kylie Birney received a number of academic accolades including the IWLCA Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Atlantic Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season. She was also Detroit Mercy's school's first CoSIDA At-Large honoree since 2008 and first women recipient since 1984.

Junior golfer Sarah Montone and senior men's lacrosse standout Paul Bitetti were also named Scholar All-Americans by their respective sport's coaches association.

Sophomore cross country runner Ben Kendell was tabbed the Co-Horizon League Fall Scholar Athlete of the year, while redshirt-junior women's basketball guard Rosanna Reynolds earned the Co-Horizon League Winter Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Titans had 267 student-athletes earn their way onto the Detroit Mercy Athletic Director's Honor Roll and 164 on the Horizon League's Fall and Spring Academic Rolls, not to mention 27 student-athletes who were selected to the Horizon League All-Academic Teams.

With a GPA of 3.608, the men's golf team earned the 2016 Team Excellence Award, which recognizes the varsity team with the highest overall grade point average for the past academic year. The women's golf team with a GPA of 3.547 was the highest among the female varsity sports.

The men's and women's cross country teams were tabbed All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

All 19 Titan teams posted multi-year scores above the NCAA qualifying mark for the fifth straight year in the latest Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) released in April. Two teams posted perfect 1,000 multi-year APR scores, five at 990 and above and 12 at 980 and above for the latest 2014-15 data.

The two perfect 1,000 scores were achieved by the men's fencing and cross country teams as they received a Public Recognition award from the NCAA. The teams were just two of 14 in the state of Michigan to receive perfect scores and men's fencing is the only Division I men's fencing program to receive the Public Recognition award in all 11 years of its existence.

Those were just a few of the many academic accomplishments achieved during the 2015-16 campaign.
