Detroit Mercy Titans Hall of Fame
As a fencer for U-D in epee, Kocab finished fifth in the nation as a junior in 1973 to garner All-American honors. He completed the 1973 campaign with an impressive 39-3 record. As a freshman, he compiled a 26-16 mark and finished second in the U.S. Junior Championships. He was a member of the 1972 NCAA National Championship team in which he posted a 38-6 record and he finished first in 1973 Illinois Collegiate Invitational which helped him in being named to the All-Midwest team that year. He was the first two-time recipient of the President’s award which is given annually to the senior student-athlete who attains academic excellence during their career. In addition, he was chosen as the first alternate for the Rhodes Scholarship. He was selected as the team captain in his senior year when he finished 20th in the nation.
