Gross was an All-America quarterback in 1961-62 and played in the 1962 Senior Bowl and North-South games. He was named the Catholic All-America Player of the Year in 1961 and the Michigan Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1962. He played in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets.
