University of Detroit Mercy Athletics

Cavanaugh started his association with the University as a student when he participated on both the varsity basketball and tennis teams. He was a three-year member of both teams in the mid-1930’s and he played a vital role on each team. He lead the basketball team in scoring as a sophomore and then went on to captain the tennis squad his senior season. He returned to U-D 10 years later as a coach of the tennis team where he recorded a mark of 20-16-0 in three seasons.
