McDonald was the captain of the 1957 team and co-captain of the 1958 squad. He competed three straight years in epee at the NCAA Tournament, leading to national rankings of 15th, 15th, and 10th. He coached the freshmen fencers for three years and later captured the epee and foil titles of France and Spain in 1964.
