Detroit Mercy Titans Hall of Fame
Vargo was a two-time All-Catholic and All-American performer at left end for U of D during his brilliant career. As a senior in 1961; he caught 32 passes for 601 yards and led the Titans with eight touchdowns. His greatest day on the gridiron came against Navy when he had 11 receptions for 152 yards and all three U of D touchdowns. Those 11 catches and three scores were major-college highs in 1961 and enabled him to become the sixth ranked receiver nationally that year. Vargo became the first Titan to ever play in the Senior Bowl All-Star game following the 1961 season and was only the second U of D player to compete in the North-South game. He closed out his career with 958 yards on 56 receptions and 12 touchdowns. Aside from his offensive capabilities, he was chosen as U of D’s outstanding lineman in 1961 and went on to play professionally with the Detroit Lions, the team which drafted him after his junior year at U of D.
